Fiberboard Vs Drywall

Mdf(medium density fiberboard) while mdf has a similar mass as drywall and will give roundabout the same type of soundproofing results, it has a couple of serious drawbacks: it costs more- a single ¾“ thick, 4ft x 8ft sheet of mdf costs about $30.. Drywall consists of a core of gypsum plaster pressed between two thick sheets of paper. the gypsum plaster core is made out of fiber, a foaming agent, finely ground gypsum crystal and additives. to make drywall, the wet gypsum core gets sandwiched between heavy paper or fiberglass mats.. Should you use paper tape or mesh tape for your project? in this segment we'll go over the strengths and weaknesses of both. see my addendum to this video "paper tape vs fiberglass mesh tape 2"..

Assuming its for a stud wall, mdf (or osb) is sometimes used as the first layer when finishing a stud wall, with drywall as the second layer layer for finishing (mud). you then have something to screw things into which is better than trying to get a fixing on studs or using dw fixings.. Most people seem to end up using drywall. most designs use double layers of drywall (on each side) to achieve mass. i very much doubt that the ply or mdf will beat the mass per buck and ease if installation/finish of drywall.. Joel, thanks for getting back to me. that must be what i have. looks like fun! at least it is a small hallway. almost not 'hall-like'. so, i don't feel like trying drywall because i can never get the wiring box holes lined up..
